Ciaran J. Ryan is a Melbourne based freelance writer and journalist whose ethos can be summarised in three words: conciseness, cohesion, and clarity. Never without a pen and always making a point, he understands that in order to create writing that engages, information  must be concrete, grammar immaculate, and content delivered with immediacy and at high quality. It is because of this that he believes one can never be too prepared and that deadlines are nonnegotiable.

In 2010, Ryan completed an internship at SYN Media where he was responsible for media/talent bookings, broadcast schedules, content editing, website curation, and administrative tasks. This experience only increased his voracious hunger for news media, and for the next two years he co-hosted, wrote, and produced his own hourly radio news program once a week. During this time he also was a regular contributor for Swinburne Student Radio where he would report the news for listeners streaming online.

In 2011, Ryan graduated on the dean’s list from Swinburne University of Technology with a Bachelor of Media & Communications. He then worked in digital advertising as an account coordinator at ONQ, before deciding that reviewing banner ads and EDMs wasn’t quite for him. So he decided to further his passion for writing and enrolled at RMIT University where, in 2016, he received an Advanced Diploma of Professional Screenwriting with a HD average. Therefore, Ryan is not only able to spot a story, but able to tell it so it resonates with modern reading habits.

During his last year at RMIT, Ryan also contributed to student magazine Catalyst, where he covered adventure travel and politics. He also contributed music reviews when his melodic tastes weren’t too astringent for readers. Since then he has only continued to ply his craft and has been published nationally in Quadrant and Wild as he continues to broaden his portfolio.

Unapologetic and rigorously principled, Ciaran J. Ryan is adept at translating ideas into a variety of literary forms, including: reports, features, long and short-form essays, prose, film/radio scripts, profiles, op-eds, and copy. He also has experience recording and editing video and sound media, and he has been known to supply original photography with some of his writing projects.

Areas of interest include: current affairs, local and international politics, culture, history, film, literature, adventure travel, lifestyle and sport.
